When “dry” isn't enough to describe how you're feeling

Many patients have experienced years of frustration due to undiagnosed symptoms. Do you recognize these signs?

  • Eyes: Intense burn, constant sensation of sand, extreme sensitivity to light.
  • Mouth: Feeling “pasty” or cottony in the mouth, the need to drink constantly (even at night), difficulty swallowing dry food.
  • Body: Chronic and disabling fatigue (exhaustion), joint or muscle pain.

If you are struggling with these multiple symptoms, you may be feeling frustrated by the lack of responses or by treatments that only provide temporary relief. Sjogren's Syndrome is a condition where the immune system attacks moisture-producing glands. If not diagnosed, it can cause serious complications (eye damage, major dental problems). Identifying the root cause is critical.

Comprehensive Care for a Complex Disease

Understanding the systemic nature of Sjogren's Syndrome is the first step to effectively manage your symptoms and significantly improve your quality of life. This autoimmune disease is the most well known cause of Severe Dry Eye (dry keratoconjunctivitis). It is very often accompanied by chronic inflammation of the eyelids (Blepharitis), of a Major meibomian gland dysfunction (DGM), and may even evolve into a Neuropathic ocular pain.

Sjogren's syndrome mostly affects women over the age of 40, and although its exact cause is unknown, some risk factors are well identified. The Presence of Others Autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, increases the likelihood of developing it. One Genetic predisposition is also an important factor. To the CARE Clinic Of Sainte-Thérèse, our multidisciplinary approach and our advanced diagnostic tools allow us to make an accurate diagnosis and to distinguish Sjögren from other causes of severe drought.

FAQ
Can you give the full diagnosis?

Our assessment provides the essential ocular criteria. The final diagnosis is usually confirmed by a rheumatologist by combining our results with specific blood tests and sometimes other tests.

My blood tests were negative. Is it relevant?

Yes. Approximately 20-30% of patients with Sjögren's have negative blood tests (seronegative forms). The diagnosis is then based even more strongly on the objective tests that we carry out.

What if it's not Sjögren?

If the results disprove Sjögren, we will identify other causes of your severe drought and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Is it a serious illness?

It is a chronic condition that can be disabling. However, early diagnosis allows for effective management to control symptoms and prevent long-term complications.

Are my systemic treatments (e.g. Plaquenil) sufficient for my eyes?

Often, systemic treatments help to control the condition as a whole, but they are not always sufficient to manage severe dry eyes. Local and targeted eye treatments, like the ones we offer, are essential for optimal relief.

Does a Sjögren's diagnosis mean I can never be comfortable again?

No, absolutely not. Although Sjögren is a chronic condition, modern and personalized care allows the vast majority of our patients to regain an excellent level of comfort, to resume their activities and to protect their eye health in the long term.
