When a simple “bump” on the eyelid becomes a real problem

It's painful. It is visible. And it's not going away.

You suffer from it on several levels:

  • Pain: Pulsatile, intense, making every blink uncomfortable.
  • Discomfort: You avoid eye contact. You feel uncomfortable with the swelling and redness.
  • Frustration: Home remedies don't do anything. The hump persists, hardens, and encysts.
  • Fear: “Is it going to come back again?”

If the hot compresses have not worked after a week, or if the pain is severe, you need professional intervention.

Stye or Chalazion? The right diagnosis changes everything

Stop guessing. These two conditions require different approaches.

  • Stye (Infection): Red, very painful and fast. It is an acute infection that requires immediate action.
  • Chalazion (Block): Firm, less painful but persistent hump. It is a blocked gland that requires specific techniques to be released.

Targeted treatment starts with an accurate diagnosis.

Break the Recidivism Cycle

Recurring styes and chalazions are not inevitable.

These bumps are just the symptom. The real cause? Blocked oil glands in your eyelids (a condition called DGM or blepharitis).

We're not just dealing with the current hump. We treat the source.

It is the only way to prevent the problem from coming back again and again.

FAQ
What if the hump always comes back in the same place?

Frequent recurrences indicate that the underlying cause (gland dysfunction) is not under control. This is where treatments like IPL and ZEST are key to breaking the cycle. In addition, frequent recurrences in the same location sometimes require further investigation (biopsy) to rule out any other more serious causes.

Are the treatments or procedures painful?

We take your comfort very seriously.Non-invasive treatments (IPL, JETT Plasma, ZEST, Photobiomodulation) are generally very comfortable, often described as a soft heat sensation or an eyelid massage.Interventional procedures (injections or incisions) are quick and performed under local anesthesia (drops or light injection) to minimize your discomfort. Most patients experience rapid relief after the procedure.

Do you treat chalazions in children?

Yes, absolutely. Chalazions are common in children. Our approach is adapted to ensure their comfort, by giving priority to optimized conservative treatments and soft and non-invasive technologies (such as Photobiomodulation) when possible, in order to avoid more invasive procedures or procedures under general anesthesia.

Why should I see an optometrist instead of my family doctor or the emergency room?

General practitioners handle simple cases well. However, our clinic has specialized technologies (such as IPL, ZEST) essential to treat the underlying cause (DGM/blepharitis) and prevent recurrences. In addition, we offer targeted options such as chalazion injections that are not always available elsewhere.

Can I just wait for it to go away by itself with hot packs?

Sometimes yes. Warm compresses are the essential basic treatment. However, if it persists for more than 2 to 4 weeks, or if it is very painful, professional intervention is recommended. We can often use non-invasive technologies like Photobiomodulation or IPL to speed up resolution if the compresses fail, before considering a procedure.
