iLux treatment in Greater Montreal for dry eye and blocked Meibomian glands

At Experience Care, the optometrist will examine your eyelids, Meibomian glands, and tear film. Based on the redness along your eyelid margins and the condition of your glands, they will explain whether i Lux could be suitable for you.

How i Lux unblocks Meibomian glands for evaporative dry eye

Three elements working together: targeted heat, direct visualization, and gentle compression.

01

Main mechanism

iLux delivers calibrated heat directly to the inner surface of the eyelid, where the glands need to be unclogged. The temperature reached liquefies the solidified sebum without damaging the outer skin.

02

Clinical precision

Unlike blind warm compresses, the iLux has magnifying optics. The optometrist can see the glands directly as they heat and express them. They adjust the pressure appropriately and avoid more delicate areas.

03

Immediate effect

At the exact moment when the sebum is softened by the heat, gentle and gradual compression allows for the contents of the glands to be released. It is this combination of heat + expression that distinguishes the iLux from a simple warm compress at home.

Are you a candidate for i Lux for dry eye or Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)?

If any of the following situations apply to you and warm compresses are no longer effective, i Lux may be discussed with your optometrist.
Isotretinoin-related dry eye
Meibomian Glands (MGD)

For which types of dry eye or Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is i Lux recommended?

Several situations where oil remains blocked in the eyelid glands—such as evaporative dry eye, posterior blepharitis, or when IPL treatment is not suitable. Your optometrist will determine which applies in your case.

Blocked eyelid glands due to thick sebum that warm compresses can no longer thin.

Dry, burning eyes despite using drops, fluctuating vision, or a sandy sensation.

Inflammation at the back of the eyelids that mainly affects the glands, not the base of the lashes.

Alternative to IPL for very dark skin, during pregnancy, or with a history of active herpes.

Homemade warm compresses are no longer able to unblock the eyelid glands.

When i Lux is not an option

There are certain situations that make this treatment unsuitable, sometimes temporarily. Your optometrist routinely checks for these before every session.

Active infection on the eyelid — such as a stye, herpes, weeping dermatitis, or open wound.

Eyelid surgery or lesion removal performed less than 6–8 weeks ago.

Active corneal ulcer or burn.

Altered eyelid sensitivity — due to neuropathy, post-shingles (zoster), or following nerve surgery.

Metal implant or dense permanent makeup in the treatment area.

FAQS
How long does an i Lux session last?

The active treatment on the eyelids lasts about 8 to 12 minutes for both eyes. The entire visit, including examination and follow-up, takes about 30 minutes in the clinic.

Is the treatment painful?

No. The main sensation is a warm, firm, but comfortable heat on the eyelid. The temperature is continuously adjusted to stay below the discomfort threshold. The gentle compression that follows is light and generally well tolerated.

How many sessions should I expect?

i Lux is usually performed in a single session. The optometrist will then recommend maintenance treatments every 6 months to 1 year, depending on the underlying cause and how your symptoms progress.

i Lux or Opti Light IPL—which should I choose?

Both treatments address dry eye, but through different mechanisms. IPL targets inflammation around the eyelids, which is helpful when there is visible redness or rosacea. i Lux targets blocked oil in the glands, which is useful when inflammation is less significant. The optometrist often includes both in a treatment plan, as they complement each other.

How long do the effects last?

Improvements generally appear over the following weeks. The benefits typically last for 6 to 12 months. The duration depends on your at-home care routine: using warm compresses, cleaning your eyelids, and taking omega-3s. Rosacea or a change in medication can also affect how long the results last.
